Say Yes

Published by michelle under Inspiration

Say Yes

when two violins are placed in a room
if a chord on one violin is struck
the other violin will sound the note
if this is your definition of hope
this is for you
the ones who know how powerful we are
who know we can sound the music in the people around us
simply by playing our own strings
for the ones who sing life into broken wings
open their chests and offer their breath
as wind on a still day when nothing seems to be moving
spare those intent on proving god is dead
for you when your fingers are red
from clutching your heart
so it will beat faster
for the time you mastered the art of giving yourself for the sake of someone else
for the ones who have felt what it is to crush the lies
and lift truth so high the steeples bow to the sky
this is for youthis is also for the people who wake early to watch flowers bloom
who notice the moon at noon on a day when the world
has slapped them in the face with its lack of light
for the mothers who feed their children first
and thirst for nothing when they’re full
this is for women and for the men who taught me only women bleed with the moon
but there are men who cry when women bleed
men who bleed from women’s wounds
and this is for that moon
on the nights she seems hung by a noose
for the people who cut her loose
and for the people still waiting for the rope to burn
about to learn they have scissors in their hands

this is for the man who showed me
the hardest thing about having nothing
is having nothing to give
who said the only reason to live is to give ourselves away
so this is for the day we’ll quit or jobs and work for something real
we’ll feel for sunshine in the shadows
look for sunrays in the shade
this is for the people who rattle the cage that slave wage built
and for the ones who didn’t know the filth until tonight
but right now are beginning songs that sound something like
people turning their porch lights on and calling the homeless back home

this is for all the shit we own
and for the day we’ll learn how much we have
when we learn to give that shit away
this is for doubt becoming faith
for falling from grace and climbing back up
for trading our silver platters for something that matters
like the gold that shines from our hands when we hold each other

this is for the grandmother who walked a thousand miles on broken glass
to find that single patch of grass to plant a family tree
where the fruit would grow to laugh
for the ones who know the math of war
has always been subtraction
so they live like an action of addition
for you when you give like every star is wishing on you
and for the people still wishing on stars
this is for you too

this is for the times you went through hell so someone else wouldn’t have to
for the time you taught a 14 year old girl she was powerful
this is for the time you taught a 14 year old boy he was beautiful
for the radical anarchist asking a republican to dance
cause what’s the chance of everyone moving from right to left
if the only moves they see are NBC and CBS
this is for the no becoming yes
for scars becoming breath
for saying i love you to people who will never say it to us
for scraping away the rust and remembering how to shine
for the dime you gave away when you didn’t have a penny
for the many beautiful things we do
for every song we’ve ever sung
for refusing to believe in miracles
because miracles are the impossible coming true
and everything is possible

this is for the possibility that guides us
and for the possibilities still waiting to sing
and spread their wings inside us
cause tonight saturn is on his knees
proposing with all of his ten thousand rings
that whatever song we’ve been singing we sing even more
the world needs us right now more than it ever has before
pull all your strings
play every chord
if you’re writing letters to the prisoners
start tearing down the bars
if you’re handing our flashlights in the dark
start handing our stars
never go a second hushing the percussion of your heart
play loud
play like you know the clouds have left too many people cold and broken
and you’re their last chance for sun
play like there’s no time for hoping brighter days will come
play like the apocalypse is only 4…3…2
but you have a drum in your chest that could save us
you have a song like a breath that could raise us
like the sunrise into a dark sky that cries to be blue
play like you know we won’t survive if you don’t
but we will if you do
play like saturn is on his knees
proposing with all of his ten thousand rings
that we give every single breath
this is for sayingyes

this is for sayingyes

My Tarot Card

Published by michelle under Internet

You are The Star

Hope, expectation, Bright promises.

The Star is one of the great cards of faith, dreams realised

The Star is a card that looks to the future. It does not predict any immediate or powerful change, but it does predict hope and healing. This card suggests clarity of vision, spiritual insight. And, most importantly, that unexpected help will be coming, with water to quench your thirst, with a guiding light to the future. They might say you’re a dreamer, but you’re not the only one.

What Tarot Card are You?

NZ Resources

Published by michelle under Inspiration, Internet

When I first moved to New Zealand I found it really difficult to find resources like good magazines, suppliers, craft fairs, websites, etc. But, I recently found one local website, which led me to another then another, and suddenly I started to discover an online creative community. NZ seems to support it’s creative people quite well, so I had been frustrated that I couldn’t find what I was looking for. I still lust after the resources available in the US, but at least I am starting to find things here. The main thing I wish we had available here were the art retreats/workshops that seem to be on all the time in the US - if you know of any please let me know!

So I thought, if I’ve had trouble finding this stuff, others must have to. So here is a far from complete list of interesting NZ-based websites.

http://www.felt.co.nz/ - an online marketplace (think the Kiwi Etsy)

http://www.fuel4arts.co.nz/ - arts marketing tools

http://idealog.co.nz/ - the website of the design magazine. The current issue has some great articles.

http://www.thebigidea.co.nz/ - a database of creative people and organisations

http://toggle.co.nz/ - handmade consignment store

http://www.worldsweetworld.com/ - magazine for creatives - launches  late March

http://studiohomecreative.blogspot.com/ - blog showcasing cool designers

Upcoming fairs:

http://craft2.org/ 22 March, Lower Hutt

http://autumncraft.co.nz/index.html - 12 13 April, Lower Hutt

If you know of any other interesting sites - please let me know!!

Lost My Words

Published by michelle under Misc

I am feeling lost for words at the moment - so many times I have sat at my computer specifically to write a blog post, but…. nothing…. I am feeling very flat and uninspired at the moment, I’m afraid.

I think part of the problem is I am suffering terribly with hayfever. I actually feel like I’ve got the flu - aches and pains, sore throat, cough, runny nose, headache - but I also have the itches and when I take an antihistamine I get a couple of hours’s relief.

So, apologies for being a bad blogger - I promise to return as soon as I find my words.

This week

Published by michelle under Misc

Well, it’s a very quiet Friday here and I have just been thinking back over my week wondering where did it go, what did I do, what did I learn?

  • A sick toddler is a very high maintenance toddler
  • I’m a terrible procrastinator, but I plan to work on that tomorrow
  • Yoga is intense, hard work (after 90mins my body is screaming for mercy!)
  • Working with a designer on my brand (logo, letterhead, etc) is very exciting. There is actually a very cool story behind this, which I plan to share with you in about 2 weeks time once I have the logo in my hot little hands!
  • My jewellery making muse has desserted me this week. I have spent quite a bit of time sitting and staring at all my beautiful gemstones, but ..nothing….
  • But thankfully, I had a successful shopping trip for supplies for my handbags.
  • Online marketplaces are minefields! Trying to navigate the bad from the ok (I haven’t found one yet that I would say is really good), sorting through the messages from disgruntled existing customers to determine if the issues are ones that will affect me, working out how to get the most from them. Sheesh! I’m sure this is why I have felt uninspired this week - too much time spent worrying about business processes, policies, charges, etc.
  • The options for marketing my business are endless and at times overwhelming. I seriously believe I could spend hours a day just getting the word out about Complete Fragments, but then I wouldn’t have time to make anything to actually sell!

Now it’s time to sit back, relax and surf around this wonderful internet. That reminds me, must get my blogroll set up! Who else spends their Friday nights like this? 10 years ago I would have thought I was terribly tragic, now I just really enjoy a quiet night in with time to read interesting websites.

 Have a great weekend!

Life in one colour

Published by michelle under Inspiration

I just found this article in the New York Magazine about people who only wear one colour. How odd, but also how dedicated! I totally respect their dedication to living in one colour, because I know I couldn’t do it. Black is the basis of my wardrobe (very practical for my work and for looking after my son), but if that was all I wore I would get bored very quickly. Certainly would make choosing your clothes of a morning very easy!

Anyway, I found these people quite intriguing and just thought I’d share!

Online Marketplaces

Published by michelle under Business, Internet

I recently setup my Etsy store, which was very easy to do. I was attracted to Etsy because of the size of it and the ease of use. But, I have been reading somethings about it that concern me, for example yesterday they lost data relating to item views for every store on Etsy due to a hardware problem (this data is kept in memory, not in the database - what the??!!), and the Etsy admins have recently done a few things that have left me questioning their standards and business practices.

Anyway, I plan to keep my Etsy store - as with everything in life, knowledge is power and as I am now aware of potential issues I can plan to avoid them. But, I want to spread out my risk a little, so I’m looking at other online marketplaces to also sell my products. So far I have found the ones listed below that I am starting to research - I’d love to hear from anyone who has any experience with any of these, or if you can recommend any others.

Thanks!!

Is this a problem?

Published by michelle under Internet

bloglines.JPG

I subscribe to 153 blogs - is that normal?? And I manage to keep up to date with probably 90% of them. I do find it a distraction though, it’s so easy to lose hours reading through all those blogs rather than be working, cleaning, etc.

I love Bloglines - it makes it sooooo easy to stay up to date with the sites I want to follow, without me having to do anything. Plus, it saves on download data as I don’t have to download a full site just to check if there is a new posting.

Do you use a blog reader, and if so how many do you subscribe to? Confession time - I need to know where I sit on the blog/geek scale!!

Licensing online

Published by michelle under Business, Internet

After thinking more about my previous post on Facebook and the hidden scary stuff in their terms I started looking into options for trying to protect the words and images I put on the Internet, or at least trying to control how they are used.

I have looked into Creative Commons licensing so I’ll share what I have learnt about it. There may be other options (and I’d be very interested to hear about them), but I will just cover Creative Commons for now.

I choose to be a part of the blogging community, which for me is all about “conversations” - I read something interesting or see something beautiful and I want to share it with other people I know. And I want people to feel like they can do the same with the content of my website, blog, etc. But I still want to have some control over how and where my words and images are used and I want to be recognised when my work is used somewhere else. Creative Commons gives you an easy way, as the creator, to communicate to others what uses you’re okay with.

Licensing your work with Creative Commons doesn’t affect your copyright. From the Creative Commons site:

“Offering your work under a Creative Commons license does not mean giving up your copyright. It means offering some of your rights to any member of the public but only on certain conditions.”

It’s a way of letting people know what types of use of your content you’re happy with, without them having to contact you for approval everytime they want to quote something from your site.

You can choose from a wide variety of licenses easily by checking a few boxes and clicking a button. You are then presented with code you can easily copy to your site that clearly tells people exactly what type of license you use. It also lets them click through to a very brief, easy-to-understand explanation (no lawyer-talk).

So the license I chose (you can see the details on my blog home page, over on the right) tells people I am happy for them to use my words and images so long as they attribute them to me, and that everything I do comes under the jurisdiction of New Zealand’s copyright laws.

Something else interesting I learnt is that if you are looking for images on Flickr to use on your own site/blog, you can search by the owners’ Creative Commons license. Just go to the Advanced Search and check the Creative Commons box.  Too easy.

I’m new to using Creative Commons, and like anything else I think it will only stop the honest people, but it’s worth a try. What is your experience with it??

Disclaimer: I believe the above information to be correct, but I’m not a lawyer. Use at your discretion and please undertake your own investigations relevant to your situation.

Cyber Fyber

Published by michelle under Misc

I have just signed up to take part in Cyber Fyber, which I’m really excited about!

From the web site

CYBER FYBER is an exhibition of international fiber art scheduled for January 8th to 20th, 2009 at Gallery 80808/Vista Studios, in Columbia, South Carolina, USA. The brainchild of Susan Lenz, this exhibit will focus on the supportive, global community of fiber artists with whom Susan regularly shares new techniques, contemporary approaches to textiles, and finished work by Internet websites and blogs. The exhibition will include three primary areas: Fiber ATCs (Artist Trading Cards); fiber postcards; and the work of several invited artists. The exhibition will also include FIBER DAY and ATC trading day. From the beginning, Susan Lenz is documenting CYBER FYBER on a blog/journal.

This will be the first time I have exhibited in an art gallery since I won the student section of my hometown’s annual art prize. I won’t tell you how many years ago that was.

This is the card I am trading for:

Cyber Fyber Postcard

Now, I just have to get to work making a trade to send! There are still ATCs and postcards available for trade, so if you are interested in taking part you should visit the relevant sites (link above).
